Selecting a Connection for Your Drive
USB Connection
Network Connection
Single Computer Ethernet Connection

The Iomega® Network Hard Drive supports three different connection modes. Use the information on this page if you are uncertain which connection mode best meets your needs.

NOTE: The drive can use only one connection mode at a time. Ethernet connection is not available when the drive is connected to a USB cable.

USB Connection

This is the easiest way to connect the Iomega Network Hard Drive to a single computer. Use a USB connection when:

  • Only one computer needs access to the Iomega Network Hard Drive

  • The computer has a USB 2.0* connection

*NOTE: Most new PC computers include USB 2.0. If you are unsure, see our web site at www.iomega.com for information on how to determine which version you have. Drive performance will be significantly slower if connected to USB 1.1.

Network Connection

Network connection allows multiple users to access data stored on the Iomega Network Hard Drive. Use a network connection when:

  • More than one computer needs access to a single Iomega Network Hard Drive

  • You have a small LAN setup with a 100Base-T full duplex switch, hub, or router

NOTE: A server is not required for using the Iomega Network Hard Drive on a network. All computers connected to the LAN will be able to access files stored on the Iomega Network Hard Drive; however, only one computer can write to the Iomega Network Hard Drive. See Using the Drive on a Network for information on how to assign and transfer write privileges.

Ethernet Connection to a Single Computer

This connection mode allows you to connect the Iomega Network Hard Drive to a single computer using the Ethernet connection on the back of the drive. Use this connection when:

  • Only one computer needs access to the Iomega Network Hard Drive and the computer does not have a USB 2.0 connection

    OR

  • You encounter a problem using the drive on a network connection and need to troubleshoot on a single computer connection

NOTE: A crossover cable is required for connecting the Iomega Network Hard Drive to the Ethernet connection on a single computer. This cable is not included in the package. The Ethernet cable included with the drive cannot be used for this connection mode.
