Using Your Jaz® Drive

NOTE: Your Jaz® drive can read and write 2GB* and 1GB* Jaz disks. However, it is optimized for use with 2GB disks. Drive performance will be reduced when using Jaz 1GB disks.

Use your Jaz® drive just like any other drive on your system. Store and copy files to and from the Jaz drive using the same methods you use for other drives on your system. Your Jaz drive uses only 2GB* and 1GB* genuine Jaz disks.

NOTE: A 2GB* Jaz® disk is not included in the package and will need to be purchased in order to use the Jaz drive.

*2GB or 1GB where 1GB = 1 billion bytes. The capacity reported by your operating system may differ, depending on the operating system and reporting utility.

‡ The disk eject button will not eject a Jaz® disk that is mounted on the Mac desktop. Use the standard procedures described in Ejecting Jaz Disks.

Inserting Jaz® Disks

To access the Jaz® drive, insert a disk and select the Jaz drive letter (Windows) or the Jaz disk icon (Macintosh). The Jaz drive status light on the Jaz drive flashes as the disk spins up, or when it is busy, and glows steadily while it acquires. When the light goes out, the drive is ready to use.

If you can't read from or copy to the Jaz® disk or it does not mount properly on your desktop after it is inserted, eject it from the drive and insert it again. See Ejecting Jaz Disks below.

CAUTION! Never put anything into the Jaz® drive except genuine Jaz disks with the Jaz symbol. Using Jaz disks that do not have these symbols may cause damage to your drive and affect your warranty.

Ejecting Jaz® Disks

Mac OS systems—Select the Jaz® disk icon and use Put Away from the File menu, or drag the disk icon to the Trash icon.

Windows 95/98 systems—Use the IomegaWare software eject command or push the eject button.

Windows NT 4.0 systems—Use the IomegaWare software eject command.

It is not necessary to remove the Jaz® disk from the drive when you shut down your system as long as it remains completely inserted. If the Jaz disk is ejected from the drive when you shut down your system, remove it and store it in its case. Leaving the disk in the drive but not completely inserted can allow dust into the drive which could damage the drive or disk.

Disk Eject in Case of Power Loss

The computer must be powered on for normal disk removal. If you need to eject a disk during a power failure, turn off the computer's power switch and push a straightened paper clip into the disk eject hole on the front of the drive. (See the illustration above for the location of the disk eject hole.)

CAUTION! Never force a disk into or out of the Jaz® drive. Always make sure the computer power switch is off before using the "disk eject in case of power loss" procedure.

Drive Sleep

The Jaz® drive has an automatic sleep mode that spins down a Jaz disk after 15 minutes of inactivity. The disk automatically spins up again when accessed.

You can use the IomegaWare software included with your drive to change the drive sleep setting. Refer to the IomegaWare help file included in your Jaz® software package for additional information.
