Troubleshooting

If you encounter a problem while installing or using your Jaz® drive, check this section for help.

CAUTION! To prevent damage to computer equipment, turn off electrical power before connecting or disconnecting any cables.

Jaz® drive not recognized (Windows PC compatible).

If the IomegaWare software cannot find the Jaz® drive or the Jaz®drive is not assigned a drive letter, it could be due to either a hardware installation problem or a resource or software conflict on your computer system. The following suggestions will help you check your installation:

  1. Make sure a power lead from the computer's power supply is securely connected to the Jaz® drive as shown for Mac or PC for installation instructions.

  2. If the Jaz® drive is the only or last device on the internal SCSI connection, make sure the data cable connector closest to the termination block is connected to the Jaz drive. Also make sure the termination block is securely connected to the end of the data cable.

  3. Make sure that the stripe indicating PIN 1 on the Jaz® data cable matches up with PIN 1 on your SCSI card or other SCSI connection.

  4. If your Jaz® drive is part of a SCSI chain, make sure each device in the chain has a different SCSI ID number (no duplicates). If you need to change a SCSI ID setting, turn the computer off and power down all devices, change the conflicting SCSI ID, and power up again. For more information, see SCSI Guidelines.

  5. Make sure the SCSI chain is properly terminated at each end and that termination is off (or removed) for other devices in the chain.

  6. If your Jaz® drive is connected to a SCSI card, make sure it is compatible (see Non-Iomega SCSI Cards) and correctly installed in the computer. Refer to the documentation that came with the SCSI card.

  7. Try reinstalling your IomegaWare software.

Jaz® disk not mounting (Mac OS).

If the Jaz® disk icon does not appear on the Mac Desktop, try the following suggestions:

  1. Make sure the Jaz® disk is fully inserted in the Jaz drive, and then hold down the shift key and restart your Mac. Make sure you hold down the shift key until you see the message indicating that extensions are off or disabled.

  2. If the Jaz® disk icon still does not appear, recheck the installation instructions. Make sure the Jaz drive is correctly and securely connected to the Mac.

  3. If the Jaz® drive is part of a SCSI chain, make sure that each device has a unique SCSI ID number (no duplicates) and that the SCSI chain is properly terminated. Refer to SCSI ID and termination.

You want to change the drive letter assigned to your Jaz® drive.

Drive letter assignments are controlled by the operating system—in order to change a drive letter assignment, you must work with the procedures required by your computer's operating system.

You want to change the drive letter under Windows 95/98:

If your computer is running Windows 95/98, you can change drive letters as desired for any of your removable drives (including your Jaz® drive and CD-ROM drive) by using Drive Letter Manager in IomegaWare software. The instructions are as follows:

  1. Double click the IomegaWare folder on your desktop, or select Start, Programs, Iomega, then IomegaWare.

  2. Click on the Get Help tab.

  3. Click on Drive Letter Manager.

  4. Drive Letter Manager will display the current drive letter assignments on your system.

  5. To change the drive letter for any removable drive, click the drop-down arrow next to the current drive letter and select the drive letter you want to use.

You want to change the drive letter underWindows NT 4.0:

Changing the drive letter assignments under Windows NT 4.0 is a fairly technical process. If you want information on doing this, refer to the MS Knowledgebase on Microsoft's web site at: http://www.microsoft.com.

If you cannot readily locate the MS Knowledgebase, select Microsoft's support option and enter a keyword search for "cannot change drive letter of removable drive."

Data transfer problems or drive operation is erratic.

  1. Check termination on the SCSI chain, see the SCSI Guidelines for detailed information.

  2. Make sure the Jaz® data cable is correctly connected to the Jaz drive and a compatible SCSI connection on the computer.

  3. If an external device is connected to the same card as the Jaz® drive, you may need to remove SCSI terminators from the SCSI card. Refer to the documentation that came with the SCSI card.

  4. If you are using Ultra SCSI performance with the Jaz® drive, make sure the total of all cables in the SCSI chain is less than 1.5 meters or about 5 feet. Note that the total cable length includes all internal and external connections to the same SCSI card or SCSI connection.

Problems using PC-formatted Jaz® disks with Mac OS.

If you are not running a DOS-mounting utility (such as PC Exchange) the following error message will be given, "This disk is unreadable by this Macintosh. Do you want to initialize the disk?" Mac OS cannot recognize a PC-formatted disk unless PC Exchange or another DOS-mounting utility is running.

Apple's PC Exchange versions 2.1 and earlier will not recognize PC-formatted media with a capacity greater than 1GB. Check Apple Computer's web site at http://www.apple.com/support for information on the availability of an updated version of PC Exchange.

If you want to reformat a PC-formatted 2GB Jaz® disk for use on your Mac, disable the PC Exchange extension in the Extensions Manager and restart your Mac, then use IomegaWare software to erase the disk. Note that the IomegaWare software must be running before the disk is inserted. If there is any information on the disk you want to keep, use a PC to save the files to another disk before erasing it for use on your Mac.

Computer does not start up properly after the Jaz® drive is installed

This could be due to a hardware installation problem on the SCSI chain or a resource or software conflict on your computer system.

  1. Check termination on the SCSI chain. See SCSI Guidelines for detailed information. Read through Jaz drive not recognized at the beginning of Troubleshooting.

  2. Ensure all SCSI connections are correct and tightened all the way.
  3. Make sure that each device in the SCSI chain has a unique SCSI ID number (no duplicates) and that the SCSI chain is correctly terminated. Refer to the SCSI Guidelines for detailed information on SCSI ID and termination.

  4. If you are using Ultra SCSI performance with the Jaz® drive, make sure the total of all cables in the SCSI chain is less than 1.5 meters or about 5 feet. Note that the total cable length includes all internal and external connections to the same SCSI card or SCSI connection.

  5. If the computer still does not start correctly, disconnect the Jaz® drive from the computer and restart. Refer to the advanced troubleshooting information available on Iomega's web site: http://www.iomega.com Refer to How to Get Help for additional support information.

You want to use Windows DOS mode with your Jaz® drive.

NOTE: This section describes how to switch in and out of the MS-DOS mode which is a start option for Windows 95/98. It does not apply to the DOS box (or window) that opens when you double click the MS-DOS Prompt icon within Windows 95/98. Use of the DOS box with the Jaz® drive works the same as it does with any other drive under Windows 95/98.

If you want to use Windows DOS mode with your Jaz® drive, copy the DOS drivers folder from your IomegaWare CD-ROM to your hard drive: right click on the CD icon and select Explore. Double click on the Drivers folder and drag the DOS folder to a new folder on your hard drive.

CAUTION! Do not put the Windows DOS mode drivers in your autoexec.bat file. This will cause Windows 95/98 to run in real mode, which will result in a significant decrease in system performance.

In order for the Jaz® drive to operate properly in Windows 95/98 DOS mode, you must perform a clean reboot when switching to or from DOS mode. Do not use the option from the Windows 95/98 Shut Down menu that reads: "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode." This option does not fully support the Jaz® drive.

| top of page |

To switch to DOS mode:

  1. Restart the computer and press F8 just before the full-color Windows logo screen loads. (If you are using Windows 95, look for the text line "Starting Windows 95" to appear on the screen. If you are using Windows 98, watch for a black screen with a blinking cursor.)

  2. When the menu appears, select Command Prompt Only.

  3. After the system boots into DOS mode, run guest.exe from the directory where you have copied the files.

This procedure will provide access to your Iomega Jaz® drive and most Iomega Zip® drives. To return to the Windows 95/98 graphical interface, again restart the computer.

CAUTION! Do not type "win" at the DOS prompt after running guest.exe as this will cause duplicate drive letters.
