Installing the Jaz® Internal drive in a PC

The instructions in this section show how to connect your Jaz® drive to a SCSI card installed in your PC. For maximum Jaz performance, you can install and use a Jaz® Jet® PCI Ultra SCSI card to connect your Jaz drive.

To order a Jaz® Jet® card online, go to: http://www.iomega.com/direct/main/home.jsp. To order from Iomega by phone, call: 1-800-MY-STUFF** (1-800-697-8833) or purchase one from your local computer dealer.

  • Your computer must have a SCSI card with an internal connection to install the Jaz® Internal SCSI drive. If you are unsure whether your system has a SCSI connection, review the SCSI Guidelines.

  • If you plan to use a non-Iomega, SCSI card, refer to "Non-Iomega SCSI Cards" in the SCSI Guidelines.

  • If more than one SCSI device will be attached to one SCSI data cable, you will have a SCSI chain. Review the SCSI Guidelines.

  1. Check the ID of the Existing SCSI devices.

If there will be other SCSI devices connected to the same cable or SCSI card as your Jaz® drive, you may need to change the SCSI ID jumper setting before installing the Jaz drive. Review the SCSI Guidelines

  2. If you have not already installed the IomegaWare software, Install it now.

Your computer must have a SCSI adapter with an internal connection for the Jaz® drive.

  3. Shut down your PC, turn off all connected devices, and disconnect all electrical power.

  4. CAUTION! Always disconnect computer electrical power and power to all connected devices before beginning a computer hardware change.

  5. Remove the cover from your PC.

  6. Your PC may have safety screws at the back of the computer that must be loosened to release the cover. Refer to your computer's documentation for the proper procedure to remove the cover.

  7. Locate a vacant 3.5" or 5.25" drive bay.

  8. If you are installing the Jaz® drive into a 3.5" drive bay go to step 7, if you are installing into a 5.25" drive bay, go to step 6.

NOTE: The cover may need to be removed from the drive bay.

If you are installing into a 5.25" drive bay: Use the 3.5" Universal Installation Kit to assemble a 5.25" mounting bracket and attach it to the drive. Instructions for assembling the mounting bracket are printed on the box. (The kit can be used on some Mac compatibles also.

CAUTION! Overtightening the mounting screws or using screws that are too long could damage your Jaz® drive. Use the screws included with the adapter tray.

  9. Check mounting requirements and connect rails or adapter tray as needed.

  10. NOTE: If other drives in the computer use rails (such as a CD-ROM), you will need similar rails for the Jaz® drive. If extra rails did not come with the computer, purchase them from your computer dealer.

  11. Slide the Jaz® drive into the drive bay.

  12. If it is not clear how to install the adapter tray in the selected drive bay, refer to the documentation that came with your computer for additional information on installing internal devices.

NOTE: It may be easier to connect the power and data cables if the adapter tray is not locked in place. Vertical installation is not recommended.

  13. Using the data cable that came with your drive, locate the connector that is closest to the termination block and connect it to your Jaz® drive.

  14. NOTE: Do not mistake an ATAPI cable connector (40 pin) for the SCSI cable connector (50 pin).

NOTE: If you are connecting your Jaz® drive to an existing SCSI chain, see the instructions in SCSI Guidelines.

Making the connection—The cable connector is keyed, so it fits on only one way. If the connector does not go on easily, make sure the notch on the cable connector matches the notch on the top of the drive's data connector. Do not force the connection.

Ultra SCSI chain—;If you are using Ultra SCSI performance with the Jaz® drive, it is recommended that the total length of all cables in the SCSI chain not exceed 1.5 meters, or about 5 feet. Note that the total cable length includes all internal and external connections to a single adapter card.

NOTE: If you are connecting your Jaz® drive to an existing SCSI chain, see the instructions in SCSI Guidelines before continuing.

    SCSI Termination

The drive at the end of the internal SCSI chain must be terminated. If you rearrange the order of drives connected to the internal SCSI cable, make sure the drive connected to the last drive connector has termination on and that other drives in the chain have termination off. See SCSI Guidelines for additional information on SCSI termination.

  15. Find the colored stripe (or printing) on one side of the data cable, showing PIN 1.

  16. Connect the data cable to the SCSI card. Line up PIN 1 of the data cable with PIN 1 on the adapter.

  17. If you cannot easily identify the PIN 1 position on the SCSI adapter, check the adapter documentation for more information.

  18. Find an unused four pin power cable coming from the computer's power supply and connect it to the back of the Jaz® drive.

  19. NOTE: If your computer does not have a spare power supply cable, you will need to use a power Y-cable. Call your local computer retailer to purchase one.

  20. Secure drive in drive bay using the screws included in the 3.5" Universal Installation Kit.

  21. If screws are required, align the front of the Jaz® drive with other drives installed in the computer before securing it in place. If there is not clear access to the drive bay mounting holes, refer to your computer's documentation for additional information on installing internal devices.

NOTE: If the drive is held in place securely by side rails, you will not need to use the mounting screws.

CAUTION! Overtightening the mounting screws or using screws that are too long could damage your Jaz® drive. Use the screws included with the adapter tray.

  22. Check all connections and arrange cables to fit under the cover.

  23. Reconnect any devices previously disconnected to install the Jaz drive.

  24. Replace the cover on your PC, reconnect the power cord, and turn on the power switch.

  25. Refer to your computer's documentation if you have problems getting the cover back on. Turn power on to all connected devices, such as any external drives or printers.

Congratulations! Insert a Jaz® disk and your drive is ready to use.

Your Jaz® drive will have its own drive letter. If there is no icon or you encounter problems installing or using the Jaz Internal SCSI drive, refer to Troubleshooting.

  • You can store and copy files to and from the Jaz® drive using the same methods you use for your other drives.

  • For information on operating your new Jaz® Internal SCSI drive, refer to Using Your Jaz Drive.

  • See Using IomegaWare Software for information on the software that came with your drive.
