Installing the Jaz® Internal drive in a Mac

NOTE: You cannot install the Jaz internal SCSI drive on an iMac computer. To install the Jaz® Internal drive in a Mac (including G3 or G4) or Mac-compatible computer, you may need to purchase an adapter tray, bracket, and/or faceplate kit for your computer model from your local Apple dealer or computer store. If you have a Mac-compatible computer, you may be able to use the 3.5" installation kit to mount your Jaz drive.

The instructions in this section show how to connect your Jaz® drive to the internal SCSI bus on a Mac 9600 or older or a Mac-compatible computer. For maximum performance, you can install and use a Jaz® Jet® PCI Ultra SCSI card to connect your Jaz drive. Contact your local computer dealer or call 1-800-MY-STUFF to purchase the Jaz Jet PCI Ultra SCSI card.

G3 and G4 Users

If you are connecting the Jaz® drive to a Mac G3 or G4, refer to your computer's documentation for information on installing additional drives and PCI expansion cards. You can also visit Apple's technical information library on the Apple web site at: http://www.apple.com.

NOTE: Apple recommends that internal devices be installed only by an Apple-authorized dealer or service provider. If you do not feel comfortable with all of the instructions in this section, seek professional assistance of an Apple-authorized dealer or service provide.

  1. If you have not already installed the IomegaWare software, install it now.

  2. Set the SCSI ID on the Jaz® drive.

To check the SCSI IDs of other SCSI devices connected to your computer, go to SCSI Guidelines. If there are no other SCSI devices on your system, continue to step three.

  3. Shut down your Mac, turn off all connected devices, and disconnect all electrical power.

  4. CAUTION! Always disconnect computer electrical power and power to all connected devices before beginning a computer hardware change.

  5. Remove the cover from your Mac.

Refer to your computer's documentation for instructions on removing the cover.

  6. NOTE: Your Mac may not resemble the illustrations in this manual. If the cover does not pull forward easily, it may help to grasp the cover at the separation between the cover and the computer back, then push the back and the cover apart with your thumb and fingers.

  7. Locate a vacant drive bay with access to the front of the Mac.

  8. If you cannot locate an available drive bay with front panel access, check you computer documentation.

NOTE: The cover may need to be removed from the drive bay.

  9. Check mounting requirements and connect rails or adapter tray as needed.

  10. If you are uncertain how to install the Jaz® Internal drive, check other drives in the computer (such as a CD-ROM). To install the Jaz Internal drive in a Mac or Mac-compatible computer, you may need to purchase an adapter tray, bracket, and faceplate for your computer model from your local Apple dealer or computer store. If you have a Mac-compatible computer, you may be able to use the 3.5" installation kit provided to mount your Jaz Drive.

CAUTION! Over tightening the mounting screws or using screws that are too long could damage your Jaz® drive. Use the screws included with the adapter tray.

Mounting the Jaz® drive on the adapter tray

Mounting side rails onto the Jaz® drive

If you are installing to a Mac compatible, you may need side rails. If you are uncertain whether or not you need rails, see how other drives in the computer are mounted, (such as a CD-ROM). purchase rails from your computer dealer or manufacturer.

  11. Slide the Jaz® drive into the drive bay.

  12. If it is not clear how to install the adapter tray in the selected drive bay, refer to your computer's documentation for more complete instructions on installing internal devices.

NOTE: It may be easier to connect the power and data cables if the adapter tray is not locked in place.

  13. Connect one of the unused connectors on the internal SCSI cable to the back of the Jaz® drive.

  14. The internal SCSI cable is the wide, flat, 50 pin, ribbon cable connected to the computer's motherboard. If there is not an unused connector available on the internal SCSI cable, you can install a Jaz® Jet® PCI Ultra SCSI card to connect your Jaz drive.

NOTE: If you are unsure about how to connect your Jaz® drive to an existing SCSI chain, see SCSI Guidelines before continuing.

NOTE: If you need additional cable length to reach the Jaz® data connector, use the cable extender included with the adapter tray.

Making the connection—The cable connector is keyed to fit one way. If the connector does not go on easily, make sure the notch on the cable connector matches the notch on the top of the drive's data connector. Do not force the connection.

Ultra SCSI chain—If you are using Ultra SCSI performance with the Jaz® drive, (see SCSI Guidelines) the recommended total length of all cables in the SCSI chain should not exceed 1.5 meters, about 5 feet. Note that the total cable length includes all internal and external connections to a single SCSI adapter card.

    SCSI Termination

The SCSI drive at the end of the internal SCSI chain must have termination set to on. Usually this is handled by the Mac hard drive or CD-ROM drive. If your SCSI chain has more than one SCSI device, you may want to connect the Jaz drive at the beginning of the SCSI chain. If you rearrange the order of drives connected to the internal SCSI cable, make sure the last drive has termination set to on and that all other drives in the chain have termination set to off.

The termination block on the data cable is the only way the Jaz® Internal drive termination can be set to on. If the Jaz drive will be the only or last SCSI device, connect it at the end of the data cable closest to the termination block. See SCSI Guidelines for additional information on SCSI termination.

  15. Find an unused four pin power cable coming from the computer's power supply and connect it to the back of the Jaz® drive.

  16. NOTE: If your computer does not have a spare power supply cable, you will need to use a power Y-cable. Call your dealer or local computer retailer to purchase one.

  17. Secure the drive in the drive bay using the screws included in the 3.5" Universal Installation Kit, if needed.

  18. The adapter tray for your Mac model may lock in place, or it may be held in place by the cover and face plate assembly. If screws are required, align the front of the Jaz® drive with other drives installed in the computer before securing it in place. If there is not clear access to the drive bay mounting holes, refer to your computer's documentation for additional information on installing internal devices.

NOTE: If the drive is held in place securely by side rails, you will not need to use the mounting screws.

CAUTION! Over tightening the mounting screws or using screws that are too long could damage your Jaz® drive. Use the screws included with the adapter tray.

  19. Check all connections and arrange cables to fit under the cover.

  20. Reconnect any devices previously disconnected to install the Jaz® drive.

  21. Snap the face plate for the Jaz® drive into place on the cover of your Mac.

  22. If you have not already done so, remove the blank panel on the Mac cover that corresponds to the drive bay used by the Jaz® drive. Then snap the face plate (included with your adapter tray kit) into place.

  23. Replace the cover, reconnect the power cord, and turn on the power switch.

  24. Refer to your computer's documentation if you have problems getting the cover back on. Turn power on to all connected devices, such as any external drives or printers.

After the operating system has loaded you will be able to see the Jaz® drive icon on the desktop, after you insert a Jaz disk. Refer to Using Your Jaz Drive.

Congratulations! Insert a Jaz® disk and your drive is ready to use.

Use your Jaz® drive just like any other drive on your system. You can store and copy files to and from the Jaz disk using the same methods you use for your Mac hard disk or floppy disks.

  • If you encounter problems installing or using the Jaz® drive, or if the Jaz icon does not appear when you insert a Jaz disk, refer to the Troubleshooting.

  • For information on operating your new Jaz® Internal SCSI drive, refer to Using Your Jaz Drive.

  • See Using IomegaWare Software for information on the software that came with your drive.

For additional information, refer to the electronic help files installed on your Mac hard disk in the application folders inside the IomegaWare folder.
