My Iomega® parallel port drive is not detected when connected to an HP® DeskJet® 640C, 840C or 900C series printer in Windows® 98/95, 2000, Me and Windows NT® Document # 10864.html
HP® DeskJet® printers require bi-directional communication with the computer. This bi-directional feature can interfere with the Iomega® parallel port drive's ability to communicate normally through the parallel port. Also, you may encounter printing problems or receive error messages if the HP Printing System is installed on a computer that does not have a bi-directional port or a bi-directional printer cable. Please use the following steps to disable the HP printer's bi-directional feature.
Note: Disabling the printer's bi-directional feature will not effect the print quality. However, some of the advanced features of the Status Monitor or HP Toolbox will be disabled such as, reminders to align the print cartridges after a new print cartridge is installed and any error messages concerning the print cartridge. If you would like more information regarding the HP printer bi-directional feature, please visit the Hewlett Packard® support site at http://www.hp.com/
STEP ONE - Download and install the latest version of IomegaWare software
Make sure the Iomega parallel port drive is connected to the computer's parallel port.
Make sure the drive's power supply is connected to the drive and into a live electrical outlet.
Save the software file to a location, such as the Desktop, when prompted.
Locate and double-click the downloaded file to begin installation.
Follow all on-screen instructions to install the software.
Restart the computer for changes to take effect.
Double-click the My Computer icon and verify the Iomega drive is listed with a drive letter.
If the Iomega drive is listed and accessible, you are now ready to use the drive.
If the Iomega drive is not listed or is not accessible, please continue with the next step.
STEP TWO - Locate the printer configuration file name and disable the bi-directional feature
The following are instructions on finding the configuration filename and disabling the bi-directional feature.
Note: If you did not use the HP install floppy disk or CD-ROM to install the HP printer, you will not have a Toolbox or Program Group and bi-directional communications will not be enabled.
Open the HP DeskJet 640C, 840C or 9xx series Toolbox.
Click the printer icon located in the upper-left corner of the toolbar.
Click About.
Press and hold the CTRL key while you double-click the printer icon.
Release the CTRL key and press the ENTER key.
Click Continue to display the Configuration file.
Click the Remove HP IO button if it is present. If it is not present select the Ultra Safe Mode.
Note: The presence of the Remove HP IO button depends upon the printer driver version. If the HP IO button is grayed out, then it is inactive.
Click OK and then click OK again.
Note: To recover the HP IO, you must reinstall the printer driver.
Click the X in the upper-right corner of the Toolbox to close the window.
Restart the computer for changes to take effect.
Double-click the My Computer icon and verify whether the Iomega drive is listed with a drive letter.
If the Iomega drive is listed and accessible, you are now ready to use the drive.
