My Iomega® parallel port drive not detected in Windows® 98/95 when an HP® OfficeJet® multifunction device series 500/600/700 is connected
Document # 10351.html

HP® OfficeJet® multifunction devices require bi-directional communication with the computer for normal operation. This interferes with the Iomega® drive's ability to communicate normally through the parallel port. Please use the following steps to disable the OfficeJet status monitor.

Note: It is very difficult to configure a multifunction printer to share the parallel port with other parallel port devices. For more information about Multifunction printers, go to the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com

STEP ONE - Disabling the status monitor on HP OfficeJet 500/600/700 series devices
  1. Within the Systray, right-click the HP OfficeJet icon.

  2. Click Close HP OfficeJet Software. The icon should disappear once the software is closed.

  3. Double-click the HP OfficeJet Manager desktop icon.

  4. Click HP OfficeJet.

  5. Click the Settings button.

  6. Click Settings and Maintenance.

  7. Click the Software tab.

  8. Click the check box Display 'HP Officejet Document Assistant' box when a document is loaded to remove the X.

  9. Click OK.

  10. Close the OfficeJet Manager.

  11. Shut down the computer and continue with the next step.

STEP TWO - Check the parallel port connections and verify a drive is listed
  1. Disconnect all parallel port devices from the computer's parallel port.

  2. Check both ends of the Iomega parallel port cable for any bent or broken pins.

If there are bent or broken pins, please go to the Iomega Warranty and Returns page at http://www.iomega.com/support/returns/index.html

If the pins are straight, reconnect the parallel port cable to the back of the Iomega drive and to the computer's parallel port. Please continue.

  3. Reconnect the Iomega parallel port drive to the computer's parallel port.

  4. Plug the Iomega drive power supply into the drive and a live electrical outlet.

  5. Connect the printer's parallel port cable to the Iomega drive's data pass-through port, located on the back of the drive.

  6. Connect the printer's parallel port cable to the OfficeJet printer's port.

  7. Restart the computer.

  8. Once Windows® finishes loading, double-click the My Computer icon.

  9. Verify the Iomega drive is listed with an assigned drive letter.

If the Iomega drive is listed with an assigned drive letter, you are now ready to use the drive.

Note: If you are still having problems with the drive, you may want to purchase a second parallel port. Please contact the computer manufacturer for advice on selecting and installing a second parallel port.
