My Iomega® parallel port drive is not detected in Windows® 98/95 when an HP® LaserJet® series 5 or 6 printer is connected
Document # 10349.html

The HP® LaserJet® Series 5 and 6 printers require bi-directional communication with the computer. This interferes with the Iomega® drive's ability to communicate normally through the parallel port. A work-a-round method is to disable the status monitor for the printer. Please use the following steps to disable the printer's status monitor.

Note: If you would like more information concerning HP printers, please visit the HP Web site at http://www.hp.com/country/us/eng/welcome.htm

STEP ONE - Manually disable the status monitor
  1. Press the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys at the same time to open the Close Program dialog box.

  2. Click hppropty to highlight.

  3. Click the End Task button.

  4. Click Start, select Find and then click Files or Folders.

  5. In the Named box: type hppropty.exe

Note: Verify that the "C:" drive or the hard drive is selected in the Look In drop-down box.

  6. Click Include Subfolders.

  7. Click Find Now.

Note: The file should be located in the c:\Windows\System directory.

  8. Right-click the HPPROPTY.EXE file and click Rename.

  9. Rename HPPROPTY.EXE to HPPROPTY.BAK

STEP TWO - Check the parallel port connections and verify a drive is listed
  1. Disconnect all parallel port devices from the computer's parallel port.

  2. Check both ends of the Iomega parallel port cable for any bent or broken pins.

If there are bent or broken pins, please go to the Iomega Warranty and Returns page at http://www.iomega.com/support/returns/index.html

If the pins are straight, reconnect the parallel port cable to the back of the Iomega drive and to the computer's parallel port. Please continue.

  3. Reconnect the Iomega parallel port drive to the computer's parallel port.

  4. Plug the Iomega drive power supply into the drive and a live electrical outlet.

  5. Connect the printer parallel port cable to the data pass-through port on the back of the Iomega drive and then to the printer.

  6. Restart the computer.

  7. Once Windows® finishes loading, double-click the My Computer icon.

  8. Verify the Iomega drive is listed with an assigned drive letter.

If the Iomega drive is listed with an assigned drive letter, you are now ready to use the drive.
