My Iomega® parallel port drive is not detected in Windows® 98/95 when an Epson® Action Laser or Stylus® InkJet printer is connected
Document # 10348.html

The Epson® Action Laser and Stylus® InkJet printers install their own virtual device driver (epxlpt.vxd). This Epson virtual driver was not designed to allow the printer to share the same port with any other parallel port devices.

Note: If you would like more information concerning Epson printers, please visit the Epson Web site at http://www.epson.com/

One solution is to replace the Epson driver with the Windows® parallel port default driver (lpt.vxd.).
A second possible solution is to install a second parallel port on the computer.

Note: If you would like more information on selecting and installing a second parallel port on the computer, please contact the computer's manufacturer for advice on purchasing and installing a second parallel port.

Please use the following steps to replace the Epson virtual driver with the Windows default driver in Windows 98/95.

STEP ONE - Replace the Epson driver (epxlpt.vxd) with the Windows default driver (lpt.vxd)
  1. Right-click the My Computer icon and click Properties.

  2. Click the Device Manager tab.

  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Ports (COM & LPT).

  4. Double-click the EPSON Printer Port (LPT1) icon.

Note: If there is no EPSON Printer Port listed, the printer drivers were not installed properly. Please refer to the printer owner's manual for troubleshooting instructions or contact the computer manufacturer.

  5. Click the Driver tab.

Note: If there is no Driver tab accessible, the printer drivers were not installed properly. Please refer to the printer owner's manual for troubleshooting instructions or contact ther computer manufacturer.

  6. Click the Update Driver button.

  7. Click Next.

  8. Click "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want."

STEP TWO - Check the parallel port connection and verify a drive is listed
  1. Disconnect all parallel port devices from the computer's parallel port.

  2. Check both ends of the Iomega® parallel port cable for any bent or broken pins.

If there are bent or broken pins, please go to the Iomega Warranty and Returns page at http://www.iomega.com/support/returns/index.html

If the pins are straight, reconnect the parallel port cable to the back of the Iomega drive and to the computer's parallel port. Please continue.

  3. Reconnect the Iomega parallel port drive to the computer's parallel port.

  4. Plug the Iomega drive power supply into the drive and a live electrical outlet.

  5. Connect the Epson printer to the data pass-through port on the back of the Iomega drive and then to the printer.

  6. Restart the computer.

  7. Once Windows finishes loading, double-click the My Computer icon.

  8. Verify the Iomega drive is listed with an assigned drive letter.

If the Iomega drive is listed with an assigned drive letter, you are now ready to use the drive.
