"Unable to find Windows directory" or "Unable to find Iomega Backup directory" when creating a recovery disk using Recovery Disk Creation in Windows® 98/95

The "Unable to find Windows directory" or "Unable to find Iomega Backup directory" error messages can sometimes occur when using the Iomega® Backup tool Recovery Disk Creation if the floppy will not format correctly. This can also happen when the files that are needed to create the emergency recovery disk are not in the correct directories or located on your hard drive. Please use the following steps to help resolve this issue.

    Note: The Windows® error message may appear saying "Unable to find Windows 95 directory" even though you are running on Windows 98. The Recovery Disk Creation software can be used with Windows 98 and this error is only a generic error stating that the Windows directories needed cannot be found. Please disregard the 95 part of the error message if received.


STEP ONE - Test the floppy diskette
  1. Insert a blank floppy diskette into the floppy drive.

  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.

  3. Right-click the floppy drive icon and click Format.

    Warning: Formatting will permanently remove all data from the disk.

  4. Within the Format window, select Full and Copy system files.

  5. Click Start.

    1. If you are able to format the floppy and copy the system files, try to create the emergency recovery disk again using this diskette.

    2. If the error message occurs again, please continue with the next step.


STEP TWO - Ensure that the necessary files are present and in the correct directories on your hard drive

The exact Windows and Iomega Backup file names are listed below. These files need to be present and in the correct directories on your hard drive.

    Note: The Windows and Iomega Backup directory names below may not be the exact names listed on your machine. Ensure that files that are needed are listed under a path that is close to or matching the ones listed below. If one of the files is not under the correct Windows or Iomega Backup directory, please copy the file and move it to the correct one.

    Windows directory files

      Files needed to create the first recovery disk:

      1. windows\command\mode.com

      2. windows\command\keyb.com

      3. windows\command\display.sys

      4. windows\command\ega.cpi

      5. windows\command\keyboard.sys

      6. windows\himem.sys

      Files needed to create the second recovery disk:

      1. windows\himem.sys

      2. windows\command\format.com

      3. windows\command\fdisk.exe

      4. windows\command\sys.com

      5. windows\command\mode.com

      6. windows\command\keyb.com

      7. windows\command\display.sys

      8. windows\command\ega.cpi or ega3.cpi for Russian systems

      9. windows\command\keyboard.sys or Keybrd3.sys for Russian systems or Keybrd2.sys for Polish and Czech system

      10. windows\command\chkdsk.exe

      11. windows\command\scandisk.exe

    Iomega Backup directory files

      Files needed to create the first recovery disk:

      1. Iomega Backup\Program\config.sys

      2. Iomega Backup\Program\autorun.exe

      3. Iomega Backup\Program\recover.exe

      4. Iomega Backup\Program\language.dll or Iomega Backup\Program\english.dll

        These are only needed for Zip® and Jaz® drive support

        1. Iomega Backup\Program\guest.exe

        2. Iomega Backup\Program\guest.ini

        3. Iomega Backup\Program\ASPIPC16.SYS

        4. Iomega Backup\Program\ASPIPPM1.SYS

        5. Iomega Backup\Program\ASPIPPM2.SYS

        6. Iomega Backup\Program\ASPI8DOS.SYS

        7. Iomega Backup\Program\ASPIIDE.SYS

        8. Iomega Backup\Program\ASPI1616.SYS

        9. Iomega Backup\Program\ADVASPI.SYS

    Files needed to create the second recovery disk:

  1. If the files listed above are present and in the correct Windows and Iomega Backup directories, then you should be able to create your emergency recovery disk. Try to create the recovery disk again.

  2. If any of the files are missing or the error message recurs, please continue with the next step.


STEP THREE - Reinstall the Iomega Backup software or your Windows 98 or Windows 95 operating system

    If any of the files are missing from the Iomega Backup directory, you will need to reinstall the Iomega Backup software. If any of the files are missing from the Windows directory and cannot be located on the computer or copied from another source, you will need to reinstall Windows. Please refer to the documentation that came with your computer or Windows 98 or Windows 95 for instructions on how to reinstall the operating system.
