My Iomega® parallel port drive is not detected when I connect my HP® 680C DeskJet® printer to the same parallel port
Document # 10183.html

HP® DeskJet® printers maintain bi-directional communication between the computer and printer. This can cause a conflict while trying to use your Iomega® parallel port drive. To use your printer with the Iomega parallel port drive, you should have the latest IomegaWare™ software or you must disable
bi-directional communication between the computer and printer. To do this, please follow the steps below:

STEP ONE - Download the latest version of the IomegaWare™ software
  1. Download the latest version of IomegaWare software at http://www.iomega.com/software/

  2. Place the file in the location of your choice when prompted.

  3. Locate the downloaded file on your computer and double-click that file to begin the installation.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  5. Restart your computer to finish the installation.

  6. Double-click the My Computer icon and verify the Zip drive is listed with an assigned drive letter.

If there is a Zip drive listed with a drive letter assigned, you are now ready to use your drive.

If there is no Zip drive listed with an assigned drive letter, please continue with the next step.

STEP TWO - Search on your system for the printer driver version
Windows 95/98  |  Windows NT  |  Windows 3.1

To determine the configuration file name, you will need to know the printer model number, the operating system and the driver version of your HP software. To determine the driver version of your software, select your operating system and follow all directions:

Windows® 95/98 and Windows NT®
  1. Click Start, select Settings and click Printers.

  2. Right-click your printer type and select Properties.

  3. Click the Setup tab.

  4. Make a note of the driver version number located in the lower right of the screen.

  5. Once you have noted the driver version, please proceed to STEP THREE

Windows 3.1
  1. In Program Manager, open the Main program group.

  2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.

  3. Double-click the Printers icon.

  4. Highlight the name for your printer (example: HP DeskJet 680C series printer on LPT1).

  5. Click Setup. This will take you to the Setup screen for your printer. The driver version will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the Setup screen.

  6. Make a note of the driver version number located in the lower right of the screen.

  7. Once you have noted the driver version, please continue with the next step.

STEP THREE - Locate the configuration file name and then disable bi-directional options
Windows 95/98  |  Windows NT  |  Windows 3.1

If the printer was installed in Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT 4.0 and the floppy disk or CD-ROM disc that came with the printer was not used, the printer will not have bi-directional communication.

If the bi-directional communication in the printer driver is turned off, the print quality will not be affected. However, some of the advanced features of the Status Monitor or HP Toolbox will be disabled:

  1. You will not receive reminders to align the print cartridges after a new print cartridge is installed.

  2. You will not receive error messages associated with the print cartridges.

  3. You will no longer receive error messages associated with the banner lever on HP DeskJet 680C and 690C.
