There is no drive letter assigned to my Zip® parallel port drive in Windows® 2000/XP
Document # 10127.html

If your Zip® Parallel port or Zip Plus drive is not being assigned a drive letter on your Windows® XP/2000 system, please follow the steps below.

STEP ONE - Verify that you are using a Zip parallel port drive and not a Zip SCSI drive

Both the Zip SCSI and parallel port cable have a 25 pin male connection. Please see the illustrations below to verify which drive you have connected to your computer.

  1. Look at the back of the Zip drive.

    Zip parallel port drive

      Zip parallel port drive

The Zip parallel port drive has no switches located between the two 25 pin connectors on the back of the drive.

    Zip SCSI drive

      Zip SCSI drive

The Zip SCSI drive has two slide switches located between the two 25 pin connectors on the back of the drive.

If you have a Zip parallel port drive, continue with the next step.

If you have a Zip SCSI drive, please go to document http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/30097.html for instructions on how to detect the SCSI drive on your computer.

STEP TWO - Check your Zip drive's cable connections
  1. Shut down your computer.

  2. Disconnect the parallel port cable from your computer and Zip drive.

  3. Remove all other devices and switchboxes from your computer's parallel port.

  4. Examine both ends of the Zip parallel port cable.

If any pins are bent, broken or missing, please go to the Iomega Returns and Warranty page at http://www.iomega.com/support/returns/index.html for information on replacing the parallel port cable.

If the Zip parallel port cable does not have bent, broken or missing pins, please continue with the next step.

  5. Reconnect the Zip parallel port cable directly to your computer's parallel port.

Note: Do not reconnect switchboxes or any other devices to your computer's parallel port.

  6. Disconnect and then reconnect your Zip power supply from the drive and also from the power outlet.

  7. Restart your computer.

If the light on the front of your drive does not come on, there is a problem with the drive, please contact an Iomega® Support agent using Live 1-on-1 chat or Email

If the light on the front your drive comes on, blinks a few times and then goes off, this is normal. Please continue.

  8. Double-click the My Computer icon.

If your Zip drive has a drive letter, you are now ready to use your drive.

If your Zip drive does not have a drive letter, please continue with the next step.
