Iomega® REV™ Drive White Papers
Iomega Corporation, a global leader in data storage, has introduced a revolutionary new technology called Removable Rigid Disk (RRD). The Iomega REV drive is the first of the company's RRD-based family of products. The Iomega REV drive delivers state-of-the-art backup and archiving for individual users, small- and medium-sized businesses, and enterprise workgroups, at a lower cost but with better performance than traditional tape backup solutions. As a replacement for tape and other backup and archiving solutions, RRD technology can be counted on to store valuable data reliably.

Iomega's REV Drive Delivers 30-Year Shelf Life for Reliable Backups and Archiving
Design features and accelerated testing are keys to 30-year shelf life specification.

This paper provides valuable insights into the fundamental design elements that are incorporated in RRD disk technology. It also details why this new storage solution is ideal for data-intensive applications that require extended storage life.

Drop Resiliency of the Removable Iomega REV Disk
Test results show the Iomega REV cartridge design can survive repeated 48-inch drops.

This paper explores the resiliency of the Iomega removable rigid disk (RRD) cartridge when dropped onto a hard surface. Included in this paper are areas of interest regarding potential damage for dropped cartridges, design considerations to guard against associated damage and information on actual drop testing of REV disks. Through both innovative engineering design and rigorous testing, Iomega has gone to great lengths to ensure that its REV disks meet or exceed expectations for disk resiliency within a normal usage environment.

Iomega REV Drive Data Transfer Performance
Understanding potential transfer rates and factors affecting throughput.

Iomega has gone to great lengths to ensure that the REV drive is among the fastest technologies, thereby reducing backup times and increasing overall productivity. This paper discusses the potential transfer rates of the Iomega REV drive and the factors that can influence the system's data transfer throughput.

Contamination Control and Mitigation for Iomega's REV Technology
Iomega's three-fold strategy for contamination control: start clean, stay clean and manage the remainder.

This paper discusses contamination control for a removable cartridge disk drive system that utilizes rigid media. The paper summarizes Iomega's extensive findings and analyses as well as explains how the Iomega REV products have been designed to prevent and eliminate contamination. The research that is summarized in this document provides insight into Iomega's continuing focus on technological innovation to ensure that its RRD platform minimizes contamination and mitigates any contamination that might occur during operation.

Iomega Automatic Backup Pro Software Delivers Impressive Compression Results
Iomega REV Drive achieves up to 2.6:1 data compression with bundled IAB Pro Software.

This paper discusses the kinds of software compressions that can be achieved with Iomega Automatic Backup Pro (IAB Pro) software. While most entry-level and low-end tape devices advertise compression ratios of 2:1, only a few can claim the 2.6:1 ratio that IAB Pro delivers. To prove these claims, IAB Pro was tested using the Calgary Corpus data set on a freshly formatted drive and backed up using IAB Pro's system backup option with the Iomega REV drive as the destination drive. The results verify that the capacity of the REV drive is 35GB native and 90GB compressed, where compressed capacity is achieved assuming 2.6:1 data compression with the "high" setting on IAB Pro software. As always, this capacity may vary since compression is data and software dependent.

Mean Time Between Failure for the Iomega REV Drive
The estimated MTBF for the Iomega REV Drive is an impressive 400,000 hours.

MTBF is often used as a common measure of reliability for data storage products. This paper outlines the methodology used by Iomega to estimate the mean time between failure (MTBF) metric for the Iomega REV drive. Iomega believes that the new REV technology will achieve a 400,000 hour estimated MTBF, which indicates that REV drives will deliver the kind of outstanding reliability and piece-of-mind that consumers and corporations alike expect from a primary backup solution.
