What backup software is included with the REV 1394/FireWire® drive?
For Mac® users: Dantz® Retrospect® Express for data backup and disaster recovery.
For PC users: Iomega Automatic Backup Pro for data backup.
What compression can I expect when using the REV 1394/FireWire drive?
Compression is provided by using the included software, and therefore will vary depending on which platform you use. For Mac users, the included Dantz® Retrospect® Express software provides 2:1 compression for up 70GB of data per REV disk. For PC users, the Iomega Automatic Backup Pro compression is rated at 2.6:1 which allows up to 90GB per disk. Keep in mind that actual compression rates will vary and are dependent on the files being compressed.
Is the REV 1394/FireWire drive bus-powered?
Yes, the REV FireWire drive can operate as a bus-powered device without a power supply. You may need to use a power supply if multiple devices are "daisy-chained" to the same FireWire connection, or when using a 4-pin 1394 connection such as an i.LINK port on PCs.
.
Can you daisy-chain devices off the FireWire drive?
The REV FireWire drive includes two 1394a/FireWire 400 ports that allow for daisy-chaining of multiple devices. Keep in mind that daisy-chaining may require the AC adapter.
Why does the FireWire use the 1394a/FireWire 400 connection?
The 1394a/FireWire 400 interface provides maximum compatibility with existing systems and plenty of throughput to handle the 25 MB/s maximum native transfer rate of the REV drive, which is well within the 50 MB/s (400 Mbps) maximum transfer rate limitation of the 1394a/FireWire 400 interface.
Is the FireWire drive slower than the ATAPI or USB 2.0 drives?
All the REV drives transfer data at roughly the same speed, so there is no appreciable benefit in using one interface type over another.
Can you use a Mac-formatted disk on a PC, and vice versa?
While any REV™ disk can be formatted easily to work with either PC or Mac
systems, file sharing between platforms is not currently possible without special
utilities such as Mediafour's MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive5/,
which allows users to read Mac-formatted disks from within a Windows environment.
Apple systems will read, but not write to, a PC-formatted REV disk without additional
software.
Can the PC and Mac disks be reformatted to work on the other platform?
Yes, any REV disk can be reformatted to work on either a Mac or a PC using the Quick Format functionality that comes with the REV System Software. You must insert the disk into a drive attached to the system that you want to use, then follow the procedure for a Quick Format. This type of format typically takes about 15 seconds.
Can the REV USB 2.0 drive be used on a Mac?
Yes, but you must have the version of the REV System Software that supports the Mac operating system. To download the appropriate system software, go to http://www.iomega.com/software/index.html.
