The AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files can be edited using any text editor. With DOS version 5.0 and higher, there is a text editor called EDIT. In Windows, both the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files may be modified using the system configuration editor, SYSEDIT.
Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT in DOS:
- At the C:\ prompt type EDIT (AUTO.EXEC.BAT), press Enter.
- Make the desired changes then press the ALT-F keys.
- Select EXIT.
- Select YES to save the changes when prompted.
Edit the CONFIG.SYS in Windows 3.1x:
- Within the Windows Program Manager, click FILE, click RUN.
- In the COMMAND LINE type SYSEDIT then click OK.
- Select the appropriate title bar with the file you want to edit.
- Make changes, then click FILE, click EXIT.
- Select YES to save the changes when prompted.
Edit the CONFIG.SYS in Windows 95:
- Click Start
- Click RUN.
- Within the Open box, type SYSEDIT.
- Click OK.
- Select the appropriate title bar with the file you want to edit and make the desired changes.
- Click FILE.
- Click EXIT.
- Click YES to save the changes when prompted.
