How do I edit the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files in Windows and DOS ?

The AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files can be edited using any text editor. With DOS version 5.0 and higher, there is a text editor called EDIT. In Windows, both the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files may be modified using the system configuration editor, SYSEDIT.

Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT in DOS:

  1. At the C:\ prompt type EDIT (AUTO.EXEC.BAT), press Enter.

  2. Make the desired changes then press the ALT-F keys.

  3. Select EXIT.

  4. Select YES to save the changes when prompted.

Edit the CONFIG.SYS in Windows 3.1x:

  1. Within the Windows Program Manager, click FILE, click RUN.

  2. In the COMMAND LINE type SYSEDIT then click OK.

  3. Select the appropriate title bar with the file you want to edit.

  4. Make changes, then click FILE, click EXIT.

  5. Select YES to save the changes when prompted.

Edit the CONFIG.SYS in Windows 95:

  1. Click Start

  2. Click RUN.

  3. Within the Open box, type SYSEDIT.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Select the appropriate title bar with the file you want to edit and make the desired changes.

  6. Click FILE.

  7. Click EXIT.

  8. Click YES to save the changes when prompted.
