How do I optimize the performance of my Iomega® CD-RW (ZipCD 650) or Iomega DVD Drive?
Document #11535e.html
The following items may influence the performance of your Iomega® CD-RW (ZipCD 650) or Iomega DVD Drive:
- Open applications on your computer (such as virus scanning software, multimedia players, etc.)
- Information copied directly from a slow source device, across a network, from the Internet or from a compressed hard drive or drive partition.
- Source devices that transfer data in bursts.
- Recording numerous small files.
- Damaged source files (data loss).
- Recording files in use by your system or other applications.
- Copying to or from a CD or DVD that is scratched, dirty or damaged.
- If using a USB of FireWire® drive, other USB or FireWire devices connected to the same bus as your drive.
- An extremely fragmented hard drive.
- Overall system configuration.
Because of this, your drive may not always perform at its best.
To help optimize the performance of your drive:
- Windows® users, close all open applications on the computer, except for Explorer, Systray and the burning software.
- Turn off any screen saver, power management or suspend mode that may be enabled on the computer. These can be enabled again once the CD creation process is finished.
- If anti-virus software is installed, disable any active virus scanning when you create a CD. Remember to enable the anti-virus software when you are done.
- Do not copy information directly from a slow source device, across a network, from the Internet or from a compressed hard drive or drive partition. Copy the desired files to your computer's hard drive first.
- Write audio at slower speeds, since writing audio requires streaming more bits per second to your drive.
- If your data includes more than 10,000 very small files, create a disc image first or record at a slower speed.
- Do not copy empty directories, zero byte files or files that may be in use by your system at the time of recording.
- Keep your CDs, recorder and source drives free of dust.
- Check both the source and destination CD or DVD for scratches, finger prints and dust. If present, use another disc or clean as needed.
- If using a USB of FireWire drive, plug your drive directly into the USB or FireWire port on the back of your computer or the USB 2.0 or FireWire card.
- Record at a slower speed.
- If you choose the option to copy the information to the hard drive first, ensure that you have enough free space on your hard drive. You should have enough free hard drive space to hold the capacity of all files being copied to the disc.
- The computer's temporary directory should always have space free, at least twice the size of the largest file you are recording.
- Your entire computer, from the motherboard bus to your CD-RW drive itself, needs to be configured properly for faster recording and the highest maximum sync transfer rate.
