Document #11315e.html

Please use the following steps if a drive letter is not automatically assigned to the external Iomega® CD-RW (ZipCD™ 650) FireWire® drive or if the drive is not detected in Windows®.

Important: If you have not tried any of the basic CD-RW drive not detected troubleshooting steps yet, please go to document New Web Page Iconhttp://www.iomega.com/europe/support/english/documents/11083e.html and follow the steps listed before using this document.

STEP ONE - Check the FireWire controller

Please use the following steps to see if the FireWire controller is working properly.

Windows 98/Me users: Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.

Windows XP/2000 users: Right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.

  1. Click the Device Manager tab or icon.

  2. Click the plus (+) sign next to 1394 Bus Controller.

Note: If 1394 Bus Controller is not listed, there is a problem with the FireWire controller. Please contact the computer or card manufacturer for updated drivers and/or for more information.

  3. Under 1394 Bus Controller, a 1394 Host Controller should be listed.

If the 1394 Host Controller has an exclamation mark next to it or a red X on the icon , there is a problem with the FireWire Controller. Please contact the computer or card manufacturer for updated drivers and/or for more information.

If the 1394 Host Controller does not have an exclamation mark next to it or a red X on the icon , please continue with the next step.

STEP TWO - Check for IRQ conflicts and create a separate boot file if necessary

An IRQ is an Interrupt Request. Please use the following steps to check for IRQ conflicts.

Select your operating system

    Windows 98/Me | Windows 2000/XP

Windows® 98/Me

  1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then System Information.

  2. Click the plus (+) sign next to the Hardware Resources folder.

  3. Click the Conflicts/Sharing folder. All of the cards and/or devices that have an IRQ conflict should be listed here.

  4. If there are additional devices on the same IRQ as the FireWire controller (such as Modems, Network Cards, Audio devices, Video devices, PCMCIA controllers, etc.) an IRQ conflict is possible. Many times two or more devices can share an IRQ without conflicting. Other times IRQ sharing is not possible, which will result in computer lockups and device malfunctions.

  5. You may contact the computer manufacturer for more information about conflicting IRQs or you can physically remove any conflicting card or device from the computer. If your do not want to remove the conflicting card or device from your computer, please use the following steps to resolve IRQ conflicts by creating a separate boot profile.

    1. From the open System Properties window, select the Hardware Profiles tab. Original Configuration should be highlighted.

    2. Click the Copy button.

    3. In the text box, type a new Profile name such as Iomega CD-RW FireWire.

    4. Turn off the computer.

    5. Turn the computer back on.

    7. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.

    8. Click the Device Manager tab.

    9. You will now need to disable the devices that are sharing the same IRQ by using the following steps.

      1. From the Device Manager, select one of the devices that are sharing the same IRQ as the FireWire Controller.

      2. Double-click the icon for that device.

      3. At the bottom of the Properties screen, click Disable this hardware profile to place a check mark in the box.

      4. Continue using the steps above to disable all of the devices that are on the same IRQ as the FireWire controller.

      5. Once you are finished disabling devices, restart the computer.

    10. Boot into the Iomega CD-RW FireWire profile again.

Note: When you want to use the CD-RW drive, you will need to choose the profile that was created above (Iomega CD-RW FireWire). For all other times, you will need to choose the Original Configuration boot.

    11. Double-click the My Computer icon to see if the CD-RW drive is detected.

If the CD-RW drive letter appears, the problem is resolved and you can now use the drive.
