How can I use my Zip® drive to assist in upgrading my computer?

The Iomega® Zip® drive can be used to assist you when you upgrade your computer in any of the following ways.

  • Updating the computer's operating system.

  • Upgrading the hard drive.

  • Buying a brand new computer.

The Zip drive makes it simple to save your files to Zip disks prior to upgrading your computer and then restoring those files after you have finished upgrading. The steps below explain how you can save your files to your Zip drive prior to upgrading.

METHOD ONE - Drag-and-drop your files to the Zip disk

A popular way of transferring data from a hard drive onto a Zip disk is to drag-and-drop the files. Follow the steps outlined below to drag-and-drop data to a Zip disk:

    Windows

    1. Insert a disk into the Zip drive.

    2. Double-click the My Computer icon and double-click the drive letter assigned to the Zip drive.

    3. Click File from the menu bar, point to New and choose Folder.

    4. Type a name for the new folder you have created.

      Note : It is important to create a folder to store all of your files in. If you do not create a folder to store all of your files, you may not be able to fill the disk to its capacity.

    5. Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Explore.

    6. Click the hard drive icon.

    7. From the window on the right, click the files or folders you wish to copy.

      Note : Holding down the Ctrl key will allow you to select multiple files or folders.

    8. Drag the selected files to the Zip drive icon on the left-hand side of the window.

    Macintosh®

    1. Insert a disk into the Zip drive and the disk should mount on the desktop.

    2. Double-click the Macintosh hard drive.

    3. Locate the files or folders you wish to copy to the Zip disk.

    4. Highlight and drag the files to the mounted Zip disk on the desktop.

METHOD TWO - Use Iomega Backup

Note : This method is Windows-based only. Macintosh users must use method one.

Iomega Backup is a convenient way to back up your important files and then restore the files on the new hard drive. Use the following steps to back up your hard drive using Iomega Backup.

Note : If you do not have Iomega Backup installed on your hard drive, you can download Iomega Backup from our Software Download site at Software Download Iconhttp://www.iomega.com/software/index_en.html

  1. Click Start, select Programs, select Iomega Backup and then The Works.

  2. Locate the Devices drop-down box and select your Iomega Zip drive.

  3. From the window on the left, click the plus (+) sign next to My Computer.

  4. From the window on the left, click the box next to the hard drive icon and a check mark should appear.

  5. Click the Start button to begin the backup.
