Can I use 90 minute discs with my Iomega® CD-RW or ZipCD™ drive?
Document #10943e.html

Iomega® does not support nor recommend the use of 90 minute discs with your Iomega CD-RW or ZipCD™ drive. Also, the Adaptec® (Roxio™) software that ships with your drive does not support the use of 90 minute discs.

According to the official Red Book standard, the maximum playing time for an audio CD is 74 minutes.

Note: Red Book standard is another name for the CD-DA audio CD format introduced by Sony® and Philips®. The Red Book standard defines the number of tracks on the disc that contain digital audio data and the error correction routines that save sound from minor data loss. The format allows for a total of 74 minutes of digital sound to be transferred at a rate of 150 kilobytes per second (K/sec).

The industry has stretched the Red Book standard to support 80 minute audio CDs, but anything over 74 minutes truly violates the standard. Most CD players and recorders will have problems reading or writing to 90 minute discs.

The following problems may occur while trying to read or write to a 90 minute disc:

  • The CD player may not recognize the disc

  • The disc may not be readable

  • Tracks after 80 minutes may not be found

  • You may not be able to copy information from the disc

  • The same sector number may be used more than once during CD creation

  • The disc may contain a sector with a negative number

All of these problems can result in an unreadable disc. There is also a possibility that 90 minute discs may cause physical damage to your CD player or recorder. Because of this, Iomega strongly suggests that you do not use 90 minute discs with your Iomega CD-RW or ZipCD drive.
