Please use the following steps if a drive letter is not automatically assigned to your ZipCD ATAPI drive in Windows NT®.
STEP ONE - Check all connections
- Open your computer case.
Warning: Before opening the case on your computer or before touching the internal components, always turn off the power and disconnect your computer's power cord from the electrical outlet. To discharge personal static electricity, touch a grounded metal object such as a metal screw attached to the cover of your computer. A screw that is attached to your computer chassis is grounded. If you do not discharge personal static electricity, you risk damaging your hardware and possible loss of your data.
Caution: Removing your computer cover may void your manufacturer's warranty agreement. Before removing your computer cover, check your computer manufacturer's warranty information.
- Unplug the ribbon cable from the back of your drive and your computer's IDE channel.
- Check the ends of the ribbon cable to ensure that they are not damaged.
- Reconnect the ribbon cable to your drive and your computer. Check the connections to ensure that they are secure.
- Check the power supply connection to your drive to ensure that it is secure.
- Restart your computer.
- Double-click the My Computer icon to see if your ZipCD drive is detected.
- If your ZipCD drive is detected, the problem was caused by a bad connection. Replace your computer cover. You can now use your ZipCD drive.
- If your ZipCD drive is not detected, keep the computer cover off and continue with the next step.
STEP TWO - Determine which IDE channel your ZipCD drive is connected to and check the jumper settings
Computers normally have two IDE channels, the primary and the secondary. You can connect two IDE devices to each IDE channel, for a total of four IDE device connections. The primary and the secondary IDE channels are located either side-by-side or end-to-end as shown in the illustrations below.
Side-by-side
End-to-end
Follow the ribbon cable that is connected to your ZipCD drive to the location where the cable connects to the motherboard. Look on the motherboard for the words "pri IDE" or "sec IDE" to identify if the cable is connected to the primary or to the secondary IDE channel.
Note: The hard drive is usually connected to the primary IDE channel.
Follow the ribbon cable connected to your ZipCD drive again to determine if any other IDE devices are connected to the same IDE channel as your ZipCD drive. Choose the link below that best describes the IDE configuration of your ZipCD drive.
If your ZipCD drive is:
The only device on the secondary IDE channel | One of two devices on the secondary IDE channel | Connected to the primary IDE channel with your hard drive
The only device on the secondary IDE channel
If your ZipCD drive is the only device connected to the secondary IDE channel, your ZipCD drive should be set to master.
The jumper block on the back of your ZipCD drive should look like one of the illustrations listed below. Please refer to these illustrations to determine if your ZipCD drive is set to master or slave. Set the drive to master if needed.
- If your ZipCD drive is detected, the problem was caused by an incorrect jumper setting. Replace your computer cover. You can now use your ZipCD drive.
- If your ZipCD drive is not detected, keep the computer cover off and continue with the next step, STEP THREE.
One of two devices on the secondary IDE channel
If your ZipCD drive and another IDE device (such as a CD-ROM drive) are both connected to the secondary IDE channel, your ZipCD drive should be set to master and the other IDE device should be set to slave.
The jumper block on the back of your ZipCD drive should look like one of the illustrations listed below. Please refer to these illustrations to determine if your ZipCD drive is set to master or slave. Set the drive to master if needed.
Note: Please refer to the documentation that came with your computer or the IDE device for information on how to set the IDE device to slave.
- If your ZipCD drive is detected, the problem was caused by an incorrect jumper setting. Replace your computer cover. You can now use your ZipCD drive.
- If your ZipCD drive is not detected, keep the computer cover off and continue with the next step, STEP THREE.
Connected to the primary IDE channel with your hard drive
If your ZipCD drive is connected to the primary IDE channel with your hard drive, Iomega® suggests that you set your ZipCD drive to master, remove it from the primary IDE channel and install it on the secondary IDE channel. If you have to leave your ZipCD drive on the primary IDE channel with your hard drive, your ZipCD drive should be set to slave.
The jumper block on the back of your ZipCD drive should look like one of the illustrations listed below. Please refer to these illustrations to determine if your ZipCD drive is set to master or slave. Set the jumper to the appropriate jumper setting if needed.
- If your ZipCD drive is detected, the problem was caused by an incorrect jumper setting. Replace your computer cover. You can now use your ZipCD drive.
- If your ZipCD drive is not detected, keep the computer cover off and continue with the next step.
STEP THREE - Uninstall the ZipCD drive software
Please use the following steps to uninstall the ZipCD drive software.
Important: Iomega is unable to provide software downloads for the Adaptec® (Roxio) software from our Web site. If you have lost your ZipCD drive's software CD, please e-mail Iomega at http://www.iomega.com/support/app/csemail/jsp/CsEmailForm.jsp?&p_Region=EU&p_Language_Type=EN to obtain a copy of the software.

- Once the software is uninstalled, click OK.
- Click Yes or OK to restart your computer if prompted.
- Continue with the next step.
STEP FOUR - Reinstall the ZipCD drive software

- Insert the ZipCD drive software CD into your CD-ROM drive.
- If the software setup does not start automatically, please use the following steps:
- Double-click the My Computer icon.
- Double-click the CD-ROM drive letter where the software is located.
Note: If the ZipCD tour window does not appear and a window for your CD-ROM drive opens instead, you will need to double-click the ZipCD.exe icon.
- Follow the instructions as they appear on your screen to reinstall the software.
- Shut down your computer and unplug your computer's power cord.
- Reconnect your ZipCD drive to your computer and plug in your computer's power cord.
- Restart your computer.
- Double-click the My Computer icon to see if your ZipCD drive is detected.
- If your ZipCD drive is detected, you can now use your drive.
- If your ZipCD drive is not detected, continue with the next step.
STEP FIVE - Manually assign a drive letter to your ZipCD ATAPI drive
Note: You must have administrator rights for your computer in order to change the ZipCD drive letter assignment in Windows NT. If you do not have administrator rights or if you are unsure about your rights, please contact your system administrator for more information before attempting to change the drive letter assignment of your ZipCD drive.
- Click Start, highlight Programs, highlight Administrative Tools (Common) and click Disk Administrator.
