What should I do if my Iomega CD-RW Predator™ USB drive is not assigned a drive letter in Windows 95/98/ME ?

Please use the following steps if a drive letter is not automatically assigned to the Iomega CD-RW Predator USB drive.

STEP ONE - Check all connections

  1. Ensure the USB data cable that came with the Iomega CD-RW drive is connected firmly to the back of the drive and the computer.

  2. Check the data cable to make sure that none of the pins are bent or broken.

  3. Ensure the power supply is connected firmly into the back of the drive and the power outlet.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter appears, the problem was caused by a bad connection. You can now use the Iomega CD-RW drive.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter does not appear, continue with the next step.

STEP TWO - Check the USB controller

Please use the following steps to see if the USB controller is enabled and working properly.

  1. Click Start, highlight Settings and click Control Panel.

  2. From the Control Panel window, double-click the Systems icon.

  3. Click the Device Manager tab.

  4. Click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controller.

    Note: If the Universal Serial Bus Controller is not listed, there is a problem with the USB controller or the USB controller is not enabled in the computer's BIOS. Please contact the computer manufacturer for information on how to fix or enable the USB controller.

  5. Under Universal Serial Bus Controller, a Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub should be listed.

    • If the Universal Host Controller or USB Root Hub does not have an exclamation mark next to it or a red X on the icon , continue with the next step.

    • If the Universal Host Controller or USB Root Hub has an exclamation mark next to it or a red X on the icon , there is a problem with the USB Controller. Contact the computer manufacturer for information on how to fix the USB controller.

STEP THREE - Check the USB hub

    Note: If you are not using a USB hub, proceed to STEP FOUR.

  1. Ensure the USB hub is connected correctly and has power.

  2. Try connecting the Iomega CD-RW drive directly to one of the USB connections on the computer to see if the drive letter appears.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter does not appear, continue with the next step.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter appears, there is a problem with the USB hub. You can use the Iomega CD-RW USB drive if you leave it connected to the USB connection on the computer or contact the USB hub manufacturer if you prefer to use the USB hub.

STEP FOUR - Uninstall and reinstall the Iomega CD-Ware software

Please use the following steps to uninstall and reinstall the Iomega CD-Ware software.

Uninstall the software

  1. Click Start, highlight Settings and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

  3. Highlight Iomega CD-RW.

  4. Click the Add/Remove button.

  5. Follow the instructions as they appear on your screen to uninstall the software.

  6. Once the software is uninstalled, click OK.

  7. Click Yes to restart your computer.

Reinstall the software

    Note: You will be asked to restart the computer after reinstalling the Iomega CD-RW USB software. Please close all open applications.

  1. Insert the Iomega CD-Ware software CD into the CD-ROM drive.

  2. If the software setup does not start automatically, please use the following steps:

    1. Right-click the My Computer icon.

    2. Click Open.

    3. Double-click the CD-ROM drive letter.

    4. Double-click Setup.

  3. Follow the instructions as they appear on your screen to install the software.

  4. Restart your computer to complete the software installation.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter appears, then the problem is resolved and you can now use the Iomega CD-RW drive.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter does not appear, please continue with the next step.

STEP FIVE - Manually assign a drive letter to the Iomega CD-RW USB drive

  1. Click Start, highlight Settings and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the System icon.

  3. Click the Device Manager tab.

  4. Click the plus (+) sign next to CDROM.

  5. Double-click the Iomega CD-RW drive icon.

  6. Click the Settings tab.

  7. Under the Settings tab, locate the Reserved drive letters option.

  8. In the Start drive letter box, select the drive letter you want to use from the drop-down menu. In the End drive letter box, select the same drive letter from the drop-down menu.

  9. Restart the computer for the new drive letter to take effect.

    Note: If you disconnect the Iomega CD-RW USB drive and reconnect it to the same USB port, the drive should be reassigned the same drive letter automatically. If you reconnect the drive to a different USB port, you may need to manually reassign the drive letter again.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter appears, you can now use the Iomega CD-RW drive.

    • If the Iomega CD-RW USB drive letter does not appear, please contact Iomega Technical Support .
