How do I test the drives on my system to improve the likelihood of making a successful CD using Adaptec® Easy CD Creator™ version 4.02c or or higher?
Document # 10537e.html

Adaptec® Easy CD Creator™ software comes with two system tests that check the drives on your system for audio extraction and/or data transfer rates. Please use the following steps to obtain information on when to test and how to run the system tests when using Easy CD Creator version 4.02c or higher.

Note: To verify what version of Easy CD Creator you have; open the Easy CD Creator application, click Help and About Easy CD Creator to view the version number.

STEP ONE - When to run a system test

You should perform system tests before you create the first CD and after you make changes to any of the following:

  • The location of your temporary files

  • Select a different default device, such as using a different Iomega® CD-RW (ZipCD™ 650) drive

  • Add new devices (such as a hard drive, Zip® drive, CD-ROM drive, etc.)

  • Configuration settings

STEP TWO - How to run a system test

Note: You will be prompted to insert a data or audio CD into the drive you are testing while following the steps below. Please have a CD with one or more files or tracks on it ready.

  1. Click Start, Programs, Iomega CD-RW (or Iomega ZipCD), Features (not required in all software versions) and Easy CD Creator.

  2. Click the Tools menu at the top of the Easy CD Creator window.

  3. Click System Tests.

  4. Under Devices, click the drive letter of the drive you want to test.

  5. Click 'Data Transfer Rate Test' and/or 'Audio Extraction Test'. Depending on the drive you are testing, you can select one or both of these tests.

Note: The Data Transfer Rate test determines the average rate at which data is read. The Audio Extraction test determines the average rate at which digital audio is extracted.

  6. Click Test to perform the system test.

Note: The System Test progress screen will now appear.

  7. Once complete, the test results should appear on the System Test screen below the test and/or tests that were performed.

  8. When you are finished viewing the test results, click Close.

Note: Easy CD Creator will save these system test results for future reference. To view the test results, click Tools and System Tests.

You can use these system test results as a reference when preparing to burn your CDs. The test results can help to determine how fast you can burn your CDs, depending upon the audio extraction and data transfer rate of the source drive you use. For example; if your system's CD-ROM drive transfers small data files at 4x and you decide to use it as the source drive, you will want to set your CD-RW drive to write at or below the 4x speed. By doing this you can help prevent buffer underruns, bad burns and other issues.

Note: All current Iomega CD-RW (ZipCD 650) drive customers can purchase Iomega HotBurn® software at a discounted price. Iomega HotBurn has support for the latest Windows® operating systems and Iomega HotBurn's user-friendly interface makes burning CDs easier and faster than ever.
