What do I do with a Zip® or Jaz® disk that will not read or copy files on a Macintosh® computer?
Document # 10534e.html

If you are unable to read a file from or copy a file to a disk in your Iomega® Zip® or Jaz® drive, follow the steps below:

Note: If you are having this problem with a Windows® computer, refer to document http://www.iomega.com/europe/support/english/documents/11076e.html

STEP ONE - Is there a disk in the drive?

  1. If there is already a disk in the drive, eject the disk and reinsert it into the drive.

  2. Try to read the disk.

Note: Use the correct capacity of disk for your drive.

If the disk can be read, you are now ready to use your disk.

If the disk cannot be read, please continue with the next step.

STEP TWO - Remove read/write protection

  1. Double-click the hard drive icon.

  2. Double-click the IomegaWare folder.

  3. Double-click the Tools folder.

  4. Double-click the Tools icon.

  5. Click the Protect icon.

  6. Click Remove protection.

  7. Type in a password if prompted.

  8. Click the OK button.

  9. Click the OK button again.

  10. Try to read a disk in your drive.

If the disk can be read, the disk was read/write protected. Remove the read/write protection when you wish to use your disk.

If the disk cannot be read, please continue with the next step.

STEP THREE - Format the disk that cannot be read

Warning: Formatting your disk will permanently delete all the data from your disk. If you wish to recover the data on your disk, go to our Data Recovery site at http://www.iomega.com/data_recovery/index.html

  1. Double-click the hard drive icon.

  2. Double-click the IomegaWare folder.

  3. Double-click the Tools folder.

  4. Double-click the Tools icon.

  5. Click the Erase icon.

  6. Select Long Erase.

  7. Click the Erase button.

  8. Click the OK button.

If the format finished and the disk can now be read, you are now ready to use your disk.

If the format finished and the disk cannot be read, continue with the next step.

If the disk fails to format, contact an Iomega Technical Representative through chat or email.

STEP FOUR - Try reading from a different disk

  1. Insert a different disk into the drive.

Caution: Use a blank disk or a disk with non-critical data.

  2. Try to read the disk.

If the second disk can be read in the drive, the first disk is most likely defective, contact an Iomega Technical Representative through chat or email

Note: If you wish to recover the data on your disk, go to our Data Recovery site at http://www.iomega.com/data_recovery/index.html

If the second disk cannot be read, please continue with the next step.

STEP FIVE - Check the cable connections for your drive

  1. Shut down your computer.

  2. Disconnect your drive's cables from both your drive and your computer.

  3. Examine both ends of the cables. If any pins are bent, broken or missing, please contact an Iomega Technical Representative through chat or email for information on replacing the cable.

  4. If the pins are not damaged, reconnect the cables to your drive and computer. Make sure the connections are tight and secure.

  5. Try to read the disk.

If the disk can be read, you had a loose connection, you are now ready to use your disk.

If the disk cannot be read, please continue with the next step.

STEP SIX - Move the Zip or Jaz drive away from other electronic devices

Monitors, power supplies and other electronics may cause interference with Zip or Jaz drives.

  1. Move the drive away from any devices, as far as the data cable will allow.

  2. Try to read the disk.

If the disk can be read, keep the drive away from other devices. You are now ready to use your disk.

If the disk cannot be read, please continue with the next step.

STEP SEVEN - Turn off all extensions except the IomegaWare™ extensions

Other Macintosh extensions may conflict with the Iomega extension, which causes the Zip or Jaz drive to not read properly. Use the following steps to check for an extension conflict:

  1. Click the Apple® menu and choose Control Panels.

  2. Click the Extensions Manager™.

  3. Write down the name of the current extension set within the Selected Set drop-down list box. You will need this information later.

  4. Click the Duplicate Set button.

  5. Type Iomega extension only and select OK.

  6. Remove the X next to all extensions, except the IomegaWare extension, by clicking the X. If you are using a SCSI Iomega drive, do not disable the SCSI Iomega Driver extension. If you are using a USB drive, do not disable the USB Iomega Driver extension.

  7. Select Special and then Restart.

  8. Try to read a disk in your drive.

If you can read a disk, there is an extension conflict. Please proceed to STEP EIGHT.

If you cannot read a disk, it is not an extension conflict. Use the following steps to restore your extension set.

    1. Click the Apple menu and choose Control Panels.

    2. Click the Extensions Manager.

    3. Choose the extension set you wrote down above.

    4. Select Special and then Restart.

    5. Please contact an Iomega Technical Representative through chat or email.

STEP EIGHT - Determine which extension is conflicting

Force the Iomega extension to load first

Extensions load in alphabetical order. You can force the Iomega extension to load first by placing three spaces in front of the extension name.

  1. Click the Apple menu and choose Control Panels.

  2. Click the Extensions Manager.

  3. Choose the extension set you wrote down in STEP SEVEN.

  4. Select Special and then Restart.

  5. Once your computer has restarted, double-click the hard drive icon.

  6. Double-click the System folder and then double-click the Extensions folder.

  7. If you are using a SCSI drive, you will need to type three spaces in front of the SCSI Iomega Driver extension. If you are using a USB drive, you will need to type three spaces in front of the USB Iomega Driver extension.

  8. Select Special and then Restart.

  9. Try to read a disk in your drive.

If you can read a disk, forcing the Iomega extension to load first solved the problem. You are now ready to use your disk.

If you cannot read a disk, continue with the next step.

STEP NINE - Disable the conflicting extension

  1. Click the Apple menu and select Control Panels.

  2. Within Control Panels, open the Extensions Manager.

  3. Within the Extension Manager, remove the X next to any three extensions, except any IomegaWare extensions, by clicking the X. If you are using a SCSI drive, do not disable the SCSI Iomega Driver extension. If you are using a USB drive, do not disable the USB Iomega Driver extension.

  4. Select Special and then Restart.

  5. Try to read a disk in your drive.

Continue this process until the disk can be read again. Once the disk can be read, one of the last three extensions disabled is causing the conflict.

Enable one of the three extensions, restart your computer and try to read the disk. Continue this process until the disk no longer reads. The last extension you enable is the extension causing the problem. You can leave the extension disabled when using your drive or contact the manufacturer for an updated extension.

  6. Continue with the next step.

STEP TEN - Re-enable the extensions

  1. Click the Apple menu and choose Control Panels.

  2. Within Control Panels, open the Extensions Manager.

  3. Within the Extension Manager, replace the X to enable the non-conflicting extensions.

  4. Select Special and then Restart.
