How do I close a CD using the Adaptec® Toast™ software?
Document #10481e.html

When you're writing Macintosh® data CDs, Mac Volume, or ISO-9660 format you usually don't need to close the CD in order for it to be readable on another computer. However, some older CD-ROM drives will not read CDs that have not been closed.

There are two methods for writing data to the CD using the Toast software, Write Disk and Write Session.

  • Write Disc will close the CD after a successful write. Once the CD is closed you cannot add subsequent sessions.

  • Write Session will allow you to add data sessions at a later date and does not close the CD.

If the CD cannot be read and is currently open with data on it, re-record the data to another disc. Use the Toast and select Write Disc instead of Write Session so that the Toast software will close the disc at the end of the recording session.

Note: You will not be able to add data to a closed CD.

A single-session, closed disc CD is the most compatible type of disc for older CD-ROM drives.

To determine if the CD is closed or open please use the following steps:

STEP ONE - Determine if the CD has been closed

  1. Launch the Toast software.

  2. Place the CD in the CDR / CDRW drive.

  3. From the Recorder menu select Disc info.

  4. The bottom line in the Disc Info window will be: "MB (… blocks) are available on the disc" if the disc is open.

  5. If the disk is closed the message will read: "You can not write to this disc".

STEP TWO - Close the CD

  1. Copy the information on the open CD to your hard drive.

  2. Record the information on a new CD and choose Write Disk instead of Write Session. This will close the CD at the end of the recording. The CD should now work on most CD-ROM drives.
