How do I identify an open IRQ and DMA channel for my internal and external Ditto drive?
Document # 3010.html

Both the Floppy Disk Controller (FDC) and Ditto Dash Accelerator card can share IRQ 6 (Interrupt Request) and DMA 2 (Direct Memory Access). If sharing these resources creates a problem, you will need to change the settings on the Ditto Dash Accelerator card.

The internal tape drive connected to the FDC may conflict with the ECP printer port.

Change the DMA channel of the printer port to another DMA setting or change the parallel port setting of the printer port to EPP or bi-directional. Please refer to your computer documentation for more information about changing the DMA and parallel port settings.

Note: DMA 2 is the default setting for many ECP printers.

If a parallel port drive is not being detected, check your sound card's IRQ setting. If the sound card is using the same IRQ as the parallel port, (LPT1 uses IRQ7 by default) it may need to be changed. Printers do not use IRQ's, if there is an IRQ conflict, the printer still will work.

Identify open IRQ and DMA channel within Windows 3.1x or MS-DOS...
  1. The types of cards that may conflict with your tape drive are sound cards, network cards, modems, and scanners. Check the documentation that came with your different types of cards for IRQ and DMA settings.

  2. Check the SET BLASTER line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

    1. At the C:\ prompt, type EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT.

    2. <ENTER>.

    3. Locate the line SET BLASTER=A220, I5.... The number 15 indicates the IRQ being used by the sound card. If the number is I7 and not 15, you will need to change the IRQ setting for the sound card. Do Not make any changes to the SET BLASTER line.

    4. Change the jumper settings on your card or make the changes through the software.

Note: The SET BLASTER line may not be present in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  3. Run MSD (Microsoft® Diagnostics) to identify which IRQs are being used by your system.

    1. Type MSD at the C:/Windows prompt to run the Microsoft Diagnostics.

Note: MSD will not identify DMA channels or sound cards.

Identify open resources within Windows 98/95

IRQ, DMA Channels and I/O addresses currently being used can be found within the Device Manager. Most cases of conflicting IRQ, DMA or I/O address can be changed within the Device Manager. Please use the following steps to identify open IRQ and DMA channels:

STEP ONE - Open Device Manager and display IRQ, DMA and I/O address information
  1. Click Start.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Click Control Panel.

  4. Double-click the System icon.

  5. Click the Device Manager tab.

  6. Click Properties.

  7. Within View Resources tab, click either: Interrupt Request (IRQ), Direct Memory Access (DMA) or Input or Output (I/O).

    1. If your sound card, audio card, modem, network card or scanner are using IRQ 07 and you are using a parallel port drive, then there is an IRQ conflict.

Note: Conflicts are usually indicated by an exclamation mark (!).

STEP TWO - Change the IRQ, DMA or I/O settings
  1. Within the Device Manager, click the device that you want to change.

  2. Click Properties.

  3. Click the Resources tab.

  4. Click the setting that you want to change.

  5. Select Change Setting.

Note: Not all settings may be changed for some devices.
