CD-R / DVD+R discs:

Advantages

  1. Good for permanent data storage (discs cannot be erased).

  2. Less expensive per CD.

  3. Readable on virtually all CD-ROM and CD-R drives.

  4. CD-R can be used in most home or car stereo CD players.

  5. DVD+R can be used in most DVD players.

Disadvantages

  1. Disc space cannot be reused.

CD-RW / DVD+RW discs:

Enable you to temporarily store data in a format that is not readable on most CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. This information is only stored temporarily on the CD or DVD and can be erased.

Advantages

  1. Allows you to erase data and rewrite new information.

  2. Ideal for backup, sharing files with colleagues and transporting files between computers.

  3. Allows you to make a practice CD or test the contents of a CD before making a permanent one.

Disadvantages

  1. CD-RW incompatible with most stereo CD players

  2. DVD+RW less compatible with most DVD players
