New National Tax Time Survey Shows Many Computer Users Aren't Employing Good Backup Practices

Tax Time is The Right Time to Start Backing Up Critical Digital Data

SAN DIEGO, March 22, 2006- A new national survey of U.S. adult computer users has found that even at tax time, good backup habits are hard to come by. In fact, two of the most popular reported 'backup' practices don't produce digital backup copies at all.

The new survey, commissioned by Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), and conducted by Harris Interactive®, shows that 46 percent of U.S. adult computer users have at some time prepared income taxes using a computer. However, 57 percent of these users report using paper printouts as their only backup. Even more surprising was that 37 percent think that their computer hard drive is their backup location, leaving them completely unprotected from future hard drive failures, virus attacks, or accidental deletions.

"Paper printouts are a nice first step, but leaving tax files on the hard drive of your computer doesn't result in digital backup copies," said Jon Huberman, vice chairman and CEO, Iomega Corporation. "If the hard drive crashes or a virus or hacker cripples your computer, that electronic tax file is quite probably gone, along with all your other important data. In today's computing environment you have to protect your important files with true backup copies safely stored somewhere else. That means using removable media, external hard drives, even online storage. The key is to store a separate electronic copy in a separate location and not put all your trust in your computer hard drive."

2006: The Most Popular Backup Methods for Storing and Protecting Digital Data
According to the survey's findings of those who have used a computer to prepare their taxes, the top five backup methods (not counting paper printouts and the primary computer hard drive, which are not digital backup methods) are as follows:

  • CDs and DVDs (25 percent);
  • Magnetic media such as floppy disks and Zip® disks (14 percent);
  • Online backup (11 percent);
  • External hard drives (6 percent);
  • USB flash drives (4 percent).

"Consumers, as well as small businesses, have so many choices for backup today that there is really no excuse for losing digital tax files and other important data," continued Huberman. "At Iomega, we recommend our customers establish a simple backup routine and follow it. Our Zip drives and high capacity REV® drives, as well as our stand alone external hard drives, come complete with automatic backup software that makes it easy to create a user's own customized backup schedule to help protect important computer files. When you really think about it, protecting personal tax data, as well as that irreplaceable favorite family digital photo or video or work file, should be just as important as creating it."

Iomega has been providing people with powerful, easy-to-use storage solutions for more than 25 years, helping people protect and secure their valuable digital information. Survey Methodology
Harris Interactive fielded the study on behalf of Iomega Corporation from February 7-9, 2006, via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,477 U.S. adults 18 and older, of whom 2,083 have digital files. Data were weighted to be representative of the total population of U.S. adult computer users on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race/ethnicity, hours spent using a computer per week, hours spent online per week, and propensity to be online. In theory, with probability samples of this size, one could say with 95 percent certainty that the overall results have a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Sampling error for the various sub-sample results is higher and varies. This online sample was not a probability sample.
