Revolutionary
Iomega REV™ 35 Gigabyte Drive Now Available with
ASUS Servers
SAN DIEGO,
July 12, 2004 Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), a global leader in data storage, today announced that ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS), a leading provider of high-performance server systems, has now qualified the IomegaŽ REV™ 35GB/90GB* drive for use as the preferred backup device in ASUS servers. Iomega REV drives covered in the ASUS qualification include SCSI, ATAPI, and USB 2.0 models.
"I am happy to announce that ASUS has qualified the high-performance Iomega
REV drive as a tape-replacement solution for ASUS servers," said Werner Heid,
president and CEO, Iomega Corporation. "Iomega's REV technology gives ASUS customers
exactly what they need in a backup and disaster recovery solution: superior
speed, simplicity and reliability at a great price, without the compromises
associated with tape. Important qualifications like this one with ASUS help
to validate Iomega's OEM strategy and bring the benefits of the REV drive to
a broader audience of small business owners and IT managers."
The Iomega REV drive offers the removeability of tape with the speed and ease
of use of a hard drive. REV disks transfer data up to eight times faster than
tape**, are smaller than a deck of playing cards (10 x 77 x 75 mm), and can
be rewritten more than a million times (estimated). With a maximum sustained
transfer rate of 25 MB/sec, and using drag and drop random access technology,
REV users can copy and restore individual files in seconds.
"Our server customers require the most cost effective
ways to backup and archive their clients' critical
data," said Bernard Chang, assistant vice president
of Server Business Unit, ASUSTek Computer Inc. "The
Iomega REV drive fills this need by providing a revolutionary
product with many usage options. At peak business
hours, the Iomega REV drive is an ideal nearline storage
device that enables users to archive and retrieve a
single file within seconds. At non-peak business
hours, the Iomega REV drive can backup and restore
a large quantity of data at a much better performance
than many competing tape devices. By qualifying
the Iomega REV drive with our server products, we offer
our customers a reliable backup and disaster recovery
device at a breakthrough value and performance. With
Iomega's established reputation and leadership in HDD
removable storage devices, the Iomega REV drive is
the clear choice for us."
Iomega REV Drive: The Tape Replacement Choice Easy
to use and priced lower than most competing tape
products, Iomega's REV drive outperforms more expensive
tape alternatives like DDS-4, DAT-72, VXA®, AIT-1,
and DLT VS80. Servers with REV disk backup will also
appeal to businesses and home office users that have
never adopted tape backup due to speed, cost, or
ease-of-use issues. The market is sizeable, with 7.9
million small businesses (under 100 employees) and
32.5 million home office households in the U.S. (IDC
estimate). Medical, legal, financial and other such
businesses faced with regulatory compliance requirements
for data archiving further extend the market for internal
and external REV drives as an ideal backup, archiving,
and portable storage solution.
"Iomega's REV drive is a compelling alternative
for customers who have traditionally used tape for
backup and data protection on their entry level servers
as well as high-end desktops," said Robert Amatruda,
research manager at IDC. "REV's performance, ease-of-use
and attractive price make it a good fit for small businesses
that value high-capacity removable storage."
Revolutionary Software
Many backup software companies, including CommVault
Systems, Computer Associates, Dantz, VERITAS, and Yosemite
Technologies, already support the REV drive with standard
backup software. ASUS servers with Iomega REV drives
also include a REV-specific version of Symantec's Ghost™,
for full-system disaster recovery, and Iomega's Automatic
Backup Pro software, which provides frequent file-level
backup to a REV drive.
