New Iomega Network Hard Drive Adds 250 GB of Low-Cost Storage To Small
Networks of Multiple PCs
SAN DIEGO,
November 11, 2003 Iomega Corporation (NYSE:
IOM), a global leader in data storage, today introduced
the new Iomega® Network Hard Drive for home and
small office networks. An Ethernet-enabled external
drive, the new Iomega Network Hard Drive provides
up to 250 GB* of low-cost storage and makes it easier
than ever for the average user to organize and back
up critical data from multiple computers.
Next week, Iomega will display the new Iomega network hard drive at Comdex Las Vegas 2003, November 17-19,
in its meeting space at the Venetian Hotel.
Network Hard Drives: Personal Storage Redefined
Until now, external hard drives have been designed
to connect to a single PC as personal storage devices.
The host PC may permit other network users to share
the drive, but if the host PC crashes or is shut down,
those other users will lose access to the shared drive.
The new Iomega Network Hard Drive improves on the
personal hard drive by making it a network resource
instead. Iomega’s new drive includes a built-in
10/100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet) port that lets it connect
directly to an Ethernet network and run independently
of any PC. As a result, it is always ready for action,
providing cost-effective storage regardless of which
PCs are running. Organizing, sharing, and backing up
data across a network has never been easier.
“More and more families are setting up small
networks to link two or three home computers and share
an Internet connection. These households will instantly
appreciate the value of adding an Iomega Iomega Network Hard Drive as the digital hub for their shared music and
family photos,” said Sean Burke, vice president
and general manager of mobile and desktop solutions,
Iomega Corporation. “It also solves one of their
biggest headaches: how to keep all those computers
backed up. Because the Iomega Network Hard Drive is
always available on the network, it is an ideal destination
for automatic backups from every PC in the house.”
Features and Benefits The new Iomega Network Hard Drive helps PC users stay organized, protect critical data and ease the storage crunch. Key features include the following:
- Dual interfaces. The Iomega Network Hard Drive features both a 10/100 Ethernet interface and a Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) interface.
- Easy network installation. The drive connects to the
router that most home networks use to share an Internet connection; the
user then runs an installation utility on each client Windows® PC
(network drive support for Windows 2000 and Windows XP only; Windows
98, Windows Me, and Mac® support is planned).
- Easy Hi-Speed USB, no installation required. On
most operating systems, the Iomega Network Hard Drive
installs automatically as a Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0)
device.
- High Capacity. 120 GB and 250 GB capacities*. Multiple
drives can be aggregated into a single logical drive letter.
- Data Security. User access is password protected.
- Disaster Recovery. The included Symantec Norton Ghost™ 2003
software captures an exact image of the PC’s main hard drive, including
all system files, settings and installed software, for easy disaster
recovery.
- Real-Time Backups. The included Iomega® Automatic
Backup software gives up to four PCs automatic real-time backup across
the network. Iomega Automatic Backup is a PC Magazine Editor’s
Choice winner in 2003.
Competitive Advantages
An Iomega Network Hard Drive lets the user share storage space among
several PCs without keeping a computer running all the time as a host
for the shared drive. The result: a workspace that is quieter, simpler,
less cluttered, and more energy efficient. Compared to network-attached
storage (NAS) servers and general-purpose servers, which offer additional
advanced features for larger networks, the Iomega Network Hard Drive
is tailored to the capacity and performance needs of the household and
SOHO network for a fraction of the price.
Price and Availability The Iomega Network Hard Drive will be available in late December 2003. Estimated U.S. retail pricing is expected to be $299 for the 120 GB model* and $429 for the 250 GB model*. About Iomega
