57 Percent of California Residents Fear Losing Computer
Content Due To A Blackout or Power Failure
ROY, Utah, February 12, 2001
- Nearly one in four computer users have lost content
due to hackers, viruses, blackouts or electrical failure
and more than two-thirds of computer users fear data
loss to viruses or hackers, according to a new national
survey conducted by Bruskin Research for Iomega Corporation.
California's current energy crisis has its computer
users more worried about blackouts and power failures
than the rest of the nation, with 57 percent fearing
loss of computer content due to a blackout or power
failure according to the survey. With neighboring states
on alert as a result of the California energy crisis,
and other regions facing the same potential problem
in the near future, safeguarding computer content has
become a timely and important issue. In fact, the survey
indicates that 45 percent of computer users nationwide
are concerned about losing data due to power problems.
"The California energy crisis and viruses like
today's 'Anna Kournikova' email virus underscore the
need for all computer users to continually protect their
valuable content," stated Bruce Albertson, president
and CEO, Iomega Corporation. "The amount of important
content on personal computers is staggering, but nothing
drives home the need for backup devices like losing
hours of work when the power goes out or trying to recover
digital images and personal email after a virus or hacker
attack."
According to the survey, 41 percent of computer users
do not personally back up their data. More than two-thirds
(69 percent) of home computer users and nearly half
(46 percent) of work computer users personally back
up their data only once a month or less often, or they
never back up their data. As a result, computer users
are often completely unprepared for sudden attacks by
hackers, viruses, blackouts and electrical failure.
"Backing up data involves more than saving to
your hard drive or relying on virus protection software.
Your data is only truly protected when you take a copy
of it from your computer and keep it separately on removable
storage media that is proven and reliable like a Zip
disk," said Albertson.
Many consumers leave their data on a hard drive when
they could be using removable storage devices such as
Iomega's Zip® drives to store a copy of their data
away from the computer. Additionally, many computer
users have traditionally viewed backup as a tedious
and laborious process and therefore often elect to leave
their computer unprotected. However, new programs like
Iomega's QuikSyncTM 2 software provide automatic backup
by transparently creating a copy of any file saved to
a hard drive and saving that copy to a selected Iomega
drive.
A free 30-day trial of Iomega QuikSyncTM 2 software
is available to consumers at www.Iomega.com.
