FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Agreement Will Bring New Portability
Options to Millions of Zip®, PocketZip® and
Jaz® Customers
ROY, Utah,
Oct. 26, 2000 - Iomega Corporation (NYSE:IOM),
a global leader in data management solutions, and InterTrust
Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:ITRU), the leading
distributed Digital Rights Management (DRM) provider,
today entered into an agreement to ensure that secure
content managed through InterTrust's DRM system can
be stored on Zip(, PocketZip( and Jaz( disks.
Under the terms of the agreement,
InterTrust will integrate the unique serialization of
Iomega's Zip(r), Jaz(r) and PocketZip(tm) disks as a
component in its DRM platform, allowing content such
as digital music to be locked to a specific Iomega disk.
With this agreement, consumers will have a new means
of securely downloading copyrighted content such as
digital music and spoken word recordings to portable,
inexpensive Iomega disks.
"InterTrust's flexible and robust
DRM technology and its strong relationships with the
music and entertainment industry make it an ideal partner
in helping Iomega provide its customers with an end-to-end
secure media solution," said Germaine Ward, vice
president, software solutions, Iomega Corporation. "By
combining the DRM solutions provided by InterTrust with
the serialization of our disks, we will make it easier
than ever before to move secure digital content between
desktop and portable environments, letting customers
pick the appropriate playback device for their needs
at any given moment."
As support for Iomega disks is incorporated
into the InterTrust platform, other InterTrust partners
will be able to develop business models that include
Iomega products. Iomega will provide InterTrust's InterRights(
Point DRM client software to its customers by a variety
of means including Web-based distribution and inclusion
with IomegaWare(tm) software, which ships with millions
of Iomega products per year.
The two companies will support secure
downloads to Iomega devices in two phases. In the first
phase, content secured using InterTrust technology will
be supported for the HipZip(tm) digital audio device.
In the second phase, InterTrust will extend their technology
to support Zip(r), PocketZip(tm) and Jaz(r) drives on
the PC platform, which will allow users to carry their
disks from one device to another and seamlessly replay
them.
"We're pleased to partner with
Iomega to incorporate InterTrust's uniquely advanced
DRM into the company's products," said Edmund Fish,
chief business officer, InterTrust Technologies. "Relationships
like this are instrumental in expanding the availability
of licensed Internet content. Our DRM solution will
not only provide the millions of users of Zip, Jaz and
PocketZip disks with better access to premium content
of all types including music, but will also give them
much more convenience in how they play their disks,
whether it be on a PC, a laptop, or a digital audio
player." InterTrust's DRM solutions have received
support from major music labels, including Universal
Music Group and BMG.
"The reality today is that users
are moving between numerous devices - desktops, laptops,
digital audio players, and more," said Ward. "The
challenge is to allow users to enjoy protected content
on whatever device they choose, while protecting the
intellectual property rights of the content providers.
Iomega and InterTrust are removing the roadblocks for
consumers."
